Sports Medicine Center in Glenview
Orthopedic surgery is one of the main aspects of sports medicine. Shoulders and knees take a lot of punishment when playing sports and athletes often find their careers threatened by separated shoulders or torn ligaments in the knee.
Dr. Greg Portland works out of a number of hospitals in the Chicagoland area, including the Ravine Way Surgery Center located in his sports medicine center in Glenview. He also operates out of Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, and Skokie Hospital, and is associated with the Glenview division of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute (IBJI). Formerly a combination of members from Suburban Orthopedic Associates and Evanbrook Orthopedics, the Glenview division of IBJI focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Portland focuses on orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.
Many athletic organizations have used Dr. Portland's expertise, either as primary care for their athletes or for offering second opinions on large and important decisions, such as whether or not a surgery is necessary or a surgery will work. He is the current orthopedic consultant for Glenbrook North Athletics and the Chicago Griffins Rugby Club, and formerly was the head orthopedic surgeon for Northwestern football, women's lacrosse, baseball, and volleyball, wrestling, swimming and cross-country, as well as Evanston High School athletics. He has offered second opinions to organizations in the NFL, MLB, NHL, MLS and Arena Football leagues.
The majority of Dr. Portland's surgeries are performed at Ravine Way Surgery Center, which acts as his sports medicine center in Glenview. Anesthesia for those surgeries is provided by North Shore University Health Care Group. Inpatient surgeries, recommended for those patients with sleep apnea, large body habitus, or insurance concerns, are performed at Evanston, Glenbrook, or Skokie hospitals.
