ABOUT DR. PORTLAND
 

Greg Portland, MD grew up in upstate New York in Rochester, NY. During his youth, he spent three years living in Guadalajara, Mexico. Following high school, he attended Dartmouth College where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with honors in his major, Chinese Language and Culture. He attended the University of Virginia Medical School where he was an Augustine Todd Scholarship recipient.

He subsequently completed his internship and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Northwestern University based out of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Additional rotations were at Evanston Hospital, Lutheran General Hospital, Children's Memorial Hospital, and Cook Country hospital.

Dr. Portland traveled to Adelaide, Australia for a Sports Medicine fellowship focusing on shoulder and knee surgery. Particular focuses of the fellowship included arthroscopic shoulder and knee reconstructive procedures, total shoulder replacements, and reconstructive procedures for knee cartilage repair and replacement.

His interest in Sports Medicine stemmed from his love of sports lettering in basketball and baseball in high school, and playing rugby in college and medical school. He assisted in providing care and coverage for many of the professional teams in Chicago during his residency. During fellowship, he helped care for Australian Rules Football players.

He is the former head orthopaedic surgeon for Northwestern University football, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, swimming and woman's lacrosse teams. Patients include both professional and division I collegiate athletes. He also provides care for Glenbrook North High School football and one of the elite rugby clubs in the Greater Chicago area.

Dr. Portland has publications in the orthopaedic literature. In addition, he has presented research at regional, national, and international meetings on both Sports related topics and shoulder replacement surgery.

He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery. He also has achieved a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery. These qualifications were passed on the first attempt.

His specific interests focus on:
· Arthroscopic fixation of shoulder instability (dislocation)
· Arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery
· Partial and total shoulder replacement surgery
· Knee arthroscopic surgery
· Anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstructions in the knee
· Patellar tracking issues
· Cartilage replacement surgery in the knee
